Spurgeon's father died when he was 4 years old. His mother placed him, his brothers James Alfred and John Henry Hutchins in the Baptist orphanage (later called the Baptist Children's Home) at Thomasville, North Carolina where they received primary and secondary schooling. Spurgeon matriculated at Mars Hill College in 1910 where he remained for 1 year before leaving at the age of 17. Spurgeon became a printer, starting when movable type was still in use and later becoming a Mergenthaler Lin-O-Type machine operator before retiring in 1959.

Bio: James attended Murphey Elementary School on N. Person St. in Raleigh for grades 1-7, 1939-1947; Hugh Morson Jr. High School on E. Hargett St. for grades 8-12, 1947-52. He was drafted into the US Army along with his twin John, in 1953. They took basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, advanced training (MP School) at Camp Gordon, Georgia, and served the remainder of their enlistment at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. They were discharged on June ??, 1955, and were met by their brother-in-law, Ray Champion, and brothers Charles and Robert. They then toured by car to California before returning to Raleigh. James spent a year at NC State College then left school and went to work for Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company in Raleigh where he continued to work for 40 years until retirement.
